KB9540212 Setup monitoring and notifications for Colleqtive Retail Portal and Retail API

Jun 18, 2020
To monitor health of the Colleqtive Retail Portal and/or Retail API, you can always call one of the APIs periodically. We recommend using a call that is not creating a high server load, like the Monitoring API. In addition, you can setup your custom metrics and notifications, using the guide below.

Metrics and alert rules

The Colleqtive Retail Portal consists of the following resources:

  • Azure Web Apps: Used to present the Colleqtive Retail Portal UX and for sharing data using the Retail API.
  • SQL Azure: the database platform used to store and retrieve your data

In addition, specific Azure Logic Apps or Azure Storage containers could be setup for scheduling, or to support integration to your backend.

Using the build-in monitoring and notifications features, you can setup custom monitoring for the metrics that are relevant to your scenario. As with other Azure resources, it is possible to configure metrics and notifications easily in the Azure Portal.

For most metrics, we can easily setup notifications and alert rules.

Alert rules for Web Apps

  1. In your browser, open the Azure portal.
  2. Locate any of your App Service app an open the App Service app page.
  3. In your App Service app page, from the left menu, select Monitoring.
  4. Here, you can setup Alert rules and notification preferences.

Related to Azure Web Apps, we recommend setting notifications for Health check status and Average response time, or specific errors occurring (for example: 401 or 404).

Alert rules for SQL Azure

Related to SQL Azure, we recommend setting notifications for DTU usage (metric to check if SQL Plan is still correct). But other metrics are available based on number of (failed) connections.

Set notifications

Notification scan be sent, based on specified thresholds. For example: 70% DTU usage will be sent as an email notification, but if 90% is reached, a TEXT (SMS) will be sent.
